How to Set Up and Manage Pre-Order Items in Infigo with Production Restrictions

Goal: Enable pre-order functionality for products with a specified release date, ensuring the production process is aligned with customer expectations, especially when managing multiple products in an order.

Scenario: Pre-Ordering a Product for Future Release (e.g., March Launch)

You want to allow customers to place pre-orders for a product that will not be available for delivery until March. This setup will help determine the production volume and ensure customers are aware of the delivery timeframe.

Step 1: Setting Production Restrictions for Pre-Order Items

Full tutorials on the use of Production Restrictions can be found elsewhere on the Infigo Academy: https://academy.infigo.net/c/177/production-and-delivery-restrictions

To ensure your product is only available for delivery at the required time, follow these summarised steps:

  1. Create and Set a Production Offset (Production Restriction):

    • Create a new Production Restriction which includes a calendar with all production dates between now and the release date blocked.
    • Apply the production restriction to your product, so that the product will only be available for delivery starting at the required time, even though it can be ordered now.

Note: If there are other items in the cart, they will also be restricted to the March delivery date since only one delivery can be processed per order. This means customers would need to place separate orders to get other in-stock items delivered earlier.

  2. Delivery Countdown:

    • Consider enabling the delivery countdown feature, which shows the delivery date as the postponed date on the product page and in the shopping cart.

Step 2: Managing Orders with Multiple Items

If the customer orders both in-stock items and pre-order products:

  1. Separate Orders: Customers should be informed that only pre-order items will be delivered in March. To avoid confusion, they may need to place separate orders for in-stock and pre-order products.
  2. Delivery Date Handling: Ensure that when customers add both pre-order and in-stock items to their cart, the system adjusts the delivery date accordingly for the pre-order item.

Step 3: Communicating Delivery Information to Customers

To ensure transparency and avoid confusion, it's crucial to clearly inform customers about the delivery restrictions.

  1. Adding Information to Product Descriptions:

    • Consider adding information to the product description fields, explaining that the product will only be available for delivery at the specified time.
    • Alternatively, you can add a checkout attribute that will display an info message to customers before they proceed to checkout.
