Date and Time Variables | IV_015

In this tutorial, we will learn how to utilise two variable types, allowing users to pick a date and time. In our example, we will link these variables to fields within our template.

00:00:13:00 - 00:00:15:09
In this
tutorial, we'll learn how to utilize

00:00:15:09 - 00:00:19:24
two variable types
allowing users to pick a date and a time.

00:00:21:00 - 00:00:24:06
So in our particular example
here, we're going to link

00:00:24:06 - 00:00:26:12
these two variables that we create

00:00:26:12 - 00:00:29:16
two fields within our template
that we have on the screen here.

00:00:30:09 - 00:00:32:28
So what we basically want to have
is a date and a time

00:00:33:04 - 00:00:37:19
showing some information
on this particular flyer

00:00:40:10 - 00:00:41:00
So to begin

00:00:41:00 - 00:00:43:17
with,
we're just going to create two variables

00:00:44:00 - 00:00:48:02
by going in our InDesign window
to our Invent tab,

00:00:49:04 - 00:00:52:03
variable tab, and then add variable

00:00:54:09 - 00:00:59:02
that gives us a separate window with a few
different variables to choose from.

00:00:59:15 - 00:01:03:10
We're going to start off
with a date variable.

00:01:04:13 - 00:01:06:15
Now, the setup of
this is quite straightforward.

00:01:06:16 - 00:01:19:09
We start off with the input of a name
for this variable,

00:01:19:09 - 00:01:24:04
and then underneath there we have
the option to choose a default date.

00:01:24:04 - 00:01:28:17
So a default value for the date
which can either be a relative date.

00:01:28:17 - 00:01:33:26
So an X amount of days from today
or if you check this button here,

00:01:34:04 - 00:01:37:25
you can actually choose a specific date.

00:01:43:07 - 00:01:45:18
You've also
got the ability to choose the date format.

00:01:45:22 - 00:01:50:18
So by default we have two presets,
we have UK format and US format

00:01:51:12 - 00:01:52:01
alternative.

00:01:52:01 - 00:01:55:28
Alternatively,
you can make a custom format as well.

00:02:00:28 - 00:02:01:27
Moving further down,

00:02:01:27 - 00:02:05:10
you have the ability optionally
to assign some constraints.

00:02:05:20 - 00:02:08:26
So if there is a minimum
and a maximum date range

00:02:08:26 - 00:02:12:06
that can be specified,
you can input those here.

00:02:12:27 - 00:02:17:09
Now, those are again
linked to the relative date checkbox here.

00:02:17:10 - 00:02:22:08
So if that is checked, it will say minimum
date is X amount of days from today.

00:02:22:18 - 00:02:25:27
Maximum is X amount of days from today.

00:02:25:27 - 00:02:27:19
But check that box off again.

00:02:27:19 - 00:02:31:06
I have a date picker
so I can choose some specific dates

00:02:35:12 - 00:02:38:18
and then coming down even further,
we have selectable days.

00:02:38:19 - 00:02:43:25
So this is a sort of blanket setting where
if you've got any of these unchecked,

00:02:44:07 - 00:02:46:22
those dates will not be selectable

00:02:47:00 - 00:02:49:11
from the date picker that we're creating.

00:02:50:01 - 00:02:53:26
So for example,
if I make it so it's just a weekend option

00:02:54:24 - 00:02:57:00
and we'll see how that works
in a few moments

00:02:57:00 - 00:03:00:28
time.

00:03:00:28 - 00:03:03:28
I'm then going to create a second
variable, which works in very much

00:03:03:28 - 00:03:07:13
the same way, but this one is the time

00:03:07:13 - 00:03:15:07
variable.

00:03:15:07 - 00:03:19:11
We have a default value option here
so we can choose what shown

00:03:19:11 - 00:03:21:13
on the time picker by default

00:03:22:11 - 00:03:24:27
when the product is first loaded,

00:03:24:27 - 00:03:28:26
we can choose a date format
so either 24 hour clock or AMPM

00:03:30:18 - 00:03:32:01
and we can choose a mode.

00:03:32:01 - 00:03:37:23
So is ours only or you want to be able
to input minutes as well.

00:03:37:23 - 00:03:40:08
Again, you have some optional constraints

00:03:41:13 - 00:03:43:10
so you can choose the earliest

00:03:43:10 - 00:03:46:16
available timeslots
and the latest available time.

00:03:47:11 - 00:03:50:17
So for example, if I say that we're able
to choose a time between

00:03:51:19 - 00:03:54:04
9 a.m. and

00:03:54:04 - 00:03:57:09
3 p.m.,
anything that sits outside of those ranges

00:03:57:17 - 00:04:01:10
will not be available for us to choose.

00:04:03:09 - 00:04:06:25
We then hit save and as we've done
with other variable types

00:04:06:25 - 00:04:10:08
in this video series,
we just need to link those variables

00:04:10:09 - 00:04:13:22
to some fields
on our actual template itself.

00:04:15:14 - 00:04:18:26
So first of all,
if I select one of the text frames

00:04:18:26 - 00:04:22:22
that I want to populate,
go across to the variables tab

00:04:22:22 - 00:04:26:08
and make sure that this is enabled,
which in this case it is already.

00:04:26:18 - 00:04:31:11
But this if it's enabled
rather than disabled, that means it's now

00:04:32:17 - 00:04:35:01
dynamic and can be driven by.

00:04:35:02 - 00:04:37:10
Infigo Invent.

00:04:37:25 - 00:04:40:05
I'm just going to map this
to one of our variables

00:04:42:05 - 00:04:45:22
and choose the date picker.

00:04:46:06 - 00:04:49:17
So now whatever information is shown
or selected in the date

00:04:49:17 - 00:04:54:19
picker will display in this field.

00:04:54:19 - 00:04:58:23
I'm going to do the same
with the time picker.

00:04:58:23 - 00:05:01:28
So I've chosen a different text frame

00:05:02:14 - 00:05:06:13
and I'm linking
that to a different variable.

00:05:07:06 - 00:05:09:19
I'm then going to export
that as a mixed file

00:05:09:19 - 00:05:13:20
and import it into our MegaEdit product.

00:05:14:19 - 00:05:17:12
So that's our template
loaded into MegaEdits

00:05:18:06 - 00:05:22:08
by Zoom in there you can see that
we have our populated text frames

00:05:22:29 - 00:05:26:09
and they match what's been shown
over on the right hand side in the form

00:05:26:17 - 00:05:27:28
where we have two variables.

00:05:27:28 - 00:05:30:19
One showing the date picker
and one showing the time picker.

00:05:31:21 - 00:05:33:24
And as I change those specifications,

00:05:35:11 - 00:05:38:27
the time and the date on the artwork
itself

00:05:39:19 - 00:05:48:09
update as well.

Date and Time Variables

In this tutorial, we will learn how to utilise two variable types, allowing users to pick a date and time.

In our example, we will link these variables to fields within our template.

5. Specify a default date value for this variable

This value can either be chosen as a relative date (a quantity of days from the current date) or as a direct selection of one date.

This is the value that will be shown by default when the product first loads within MegaEdit.

6. Specify a date format

The date format can be switched between two preset values (UK or US format), or, custom formatting can be specified.

7. Optionally, set constraints on the minimum and maximum date

As with the default value, these are linked to the Relative Date checkbox.

This will change the selection between a date relative to today, or a fixed date picker.

8. Specify days which are selectable within the calendar picker

Deselected days will be unavailable for selection by default.
