00:00:05:15 - 00:00:06:15
In this tutorial we will

00:00:06:15 - 00:00:10:17
investigate the setup and use of Invent
Advanced grouping features.

00:00:11:04 - 00:00:15:24
These features allow you to align, resize
and space grouped items with precision,

00:00:16:03 - 00:00:19:17
offering enhanced way out
control and dynamic content

00:00:19:17 - 00:00:22:24
based resizing for a streamlined design
process.

00:00:24:00 - 00:00:27:00
First, we will take a look
at how to configure these advanced groups.

00:00:27:07 - 00:00:30:28
Then we'll take a look
at some examples of them in action.

00:00:30:28 - 00:00:33:05
And this will be in slightly later
tutorials

00:00:33:05 - 00:00:36:22
to better understand
how these can be effectively configured.

00:00:36:22 - 00:00:42:10
So these features work by utilizing
InDesign grouping feature for fields.

00:00:43:05 - 00:00:45:01
These groups can be enabled inside
an Invent.

00:00:45:01 - 00:00:48:09
Ensuring Invent
considers them to be dynamic fields.

00:00:48:21 - 00:00:51:21
And then this opens up
additional configuration options.

00:00:52:15 - 00:00:56:01
So in our example that we've got on screen
here we've got four fields.

00:00:56:09 - 00:00:58:15
This consists of two text fields.

00:01:00:12 - 00:01:00:21
We've got

00:01:00:21 - 00:01:04:06
one populated image field
with an image in place.

00:01:04:20 - 00:01:07:26
And then we've got one place holder
image field as well.

00:01:08:23 - 00:01:11:21
The place holder image frame is optional

00:01:11:21 - 00:01:15:25
and will be used to define the boundary
of the group in greater detail

00:01:15:25 - 00:01:20:21
than simply relying on the boundary
created when grouping the main fields.

00:01:21:12 - 00:01:24:18
So for example, just to show you
what I mean, if I multi-select

00:01:24:18 - 00:01:27:19
those three frames
and then group those together.

00:01:33:02 - 00:01:33:12
You'll see

00:01:33:12 - 00:01:36:17
our boundary is just the extent
of those frames.

00:01:37:14 - 00:01:39:28
What I can do is utilize this boundary

00:01:39:28 - 00:01:42:28
frame that we've created here,
which is just an empty image frame,

00:01:43:03 - 00:01:46:15
to actually extend
the boundary of the entire group.

00:01:48:12 - 00:01:49:18
If using an image frame

00:01:49:18 - 00:01:52:25
as a boundary,
it's essential that it is empty in

00:01:52:27 - 00:01:56:27
Invent will not recognize it
as a possible boundary field.

00:01:56:27 - 00:01:59:11
If it is not an empty image frame.

00:01:59:11 - 00:02:03:07
Okay, so I'm going to start off by moving
our boundary frame into position.

00:02:03:08 - 00:02:06:27
So I'm just going to move it
behind the rest of my fields.

00:02:11:06 - 00:02:12:16
Now next job is to ensure

00:02:12:16 - 00:02:16:05
that all of these fields are enabled
inside Infigo in Invent

00:02:16:21 - 00:02:20:21
enabling them ensures
the Invent sees the fields as variable.

00:02:21:01 - 00:02:24:17
And this is also a requirement
should you wish to enable the entire group

00:02:24:17 - 00:02:27:17
of fields inside Invents as well.

00:02:27:29 - 00:02:30:15
So this is just normal Invent 101.

00:02:30:15 - 00:02:33:15
So if I go ahead and select

00:02:33:15 - 00:02:37:02
each of those fields individually,
I can go ahead and enable them.

00:02:37:15 - 00:02:38:26
And then we could go ahead and just do

00:02:38:26 - 00:02:42:10
some additional things to that field as we
normally would in an Invent.

00:02:42:24 - 00:02:45:24
In this case I'm just going to make sure
that they're all

00:02:45:29 - 00:02:48:06
enabled.

00:02:48:06 - 00:02:52:00
You'll notice that for image frames,
we don't just get the ability to enable

00:02:52:00 - 00:02:52:28
or disable them.

00:02:52:28 - 00:02:55:15
We get the ability to choose
whether it's static.

00:02:55:15 - 00:02:58:15
So therefore it's not considered enabled.

00:02:58:15 - 00:03:02:29
Whether it's an image box
or whether we're expecting a barcode.

00:03:03:00 - 00:03:05:03
So I'm just going to switch to image.

00:03:05:03 - 00:03:08:06
And then the same with what we're
considering to be our boundary frame.

00:03:15:17 - 00:03:16:01
Now we want to

00:03:16:01 - 00:03:19:01
go ahead and create the group
if we haven't already.

00:03:19:02 - 00:03:22:02
So we'll create our group of fields
in InDesign.

00:03:22:26 - 00:03:25:08
So we've made sure
we've positioned the fields.

00:03:25:08 - 00:03:27:29
We're going to select them all.

00:03:27:29 - 00:03:30:09
That includes the boundary field.

00:03:30:09 - 00:03:33:00
Right click and then click on group.

00:03:33:00 - 00:03:34:03
It's highly recommended

00:03:34:03 - 00:03:37:19
that you rename the group
in the layers tab within InDesign.

00:03:37:27 - 00:03:41:15
So what you'll see is if I've got this
group we've just created selected

00:03:41:16 - 00:03:43:05
and go to my properties tab.

00:03:43:05 - 00:03:47:14
It's just given an ID number
which isn't really very useful to us.

00:03:47:21 - 00:03:48:22
And you might get the same

00:03:48:22 - 00:03:51:22
or similar problems
with the individual fields themselves.

00:03:51:29 - 00:03:54:29
So we recommend going to the layers tab
within InDesign

00:03:55:01 - 00:03:59:14
and renaming the group,
and maybe the individual fields.

00:04:00:05 - 00:04:03:17
And what you'll see is if I go back to
Invent, that group has now been renamed.

00:04:11:03 - 00:04:13:13
So with the group selected, I'm
going to actually enable

00:04:13:13 - 00:04:16:17
that group within the properties
tab of Infigo Invent.

00:04:18:28 - 00:04:20:18
With the group still selected.

00:04:20:18 - 00:04:23:23
We're going to navigate
down to these advanced options.

00:04:26:09 - 00:04:28:28
Now many other options are available
within the group.

00:04:28:28 - 00:04:31:28
Now covered in other tutorials
within the Infigo Academy.

00:04:33:14 - 00:04:36:20
So in terms of the advanced options
adjustments can be made

00:04:36:24 - 00:04:39:24
horizontally, vertically or both.

00:04:40:01 - 00:04:41:07
Now these options allow you

00:04:41:07 - 00:04:45:28
to specifically control
which margins and which size parameters.

00:04:45:28 - 00:04:49:08
So height and width
all controlled using this functionality.

00:04:50:04 - 00:04:53:08
In our example we're going to stick
to adjust horizontally

00:04:53:13 - 00:04:57:12
as all of our grouped
fields are in a horizontal configuration.

00:04:57:15 - 00:05:00:15
From one another.

00:05:02:03 - 00:05:05:20
Now as I mentioned before,
a boundary is not required.

00:05:05:20 - 00:05:08:04
You can just use
the general group boundary.

00:05:08:04 - 00:05:11:18
But if you want to identify
one of your fields as a boundary,

00:05:11:27 - 00:05:13:21
you can do so from this list here.

00:05:13:21 - 00:05:17:09
It will only show empty image fields.

00:05:17:28 - 00:05:22:10
And as soon as you select a boundary,
the corresponding options further down

00:05:22:10 - 00:05:26:21
this page will become unavailable because
it's now recognizing that as a boundary

00:05:26:21 - 00:05:29:21
that you're not going to want to do
any additional modification on.

00:05:30:06 - 00:05:32:22
It also means
that when you take it over to Mega Edit,

00:05:32:22 - 00:05:36:28
it's not going to consider that to be
a modifiable field for your end users.

00:05:41:26 - 00:05:44:12
Now, moving down a little bit, Infigo
provide

00:05:44:12 - 00:05:48:19
a few default size
and positioning options for the group.

00:05:49:04 - 00:05:52:21
These will automatically modify
the settings of each individual field

00:05:52:21 - 00:05:56:20
contained within the group, the options of
which can be seen in the sections below.

00:05:59:01 - 00:06:00:00
Now these are provided

00:06:00:00 - 00:06:04:06
as just some default common options,
either to utilize or to serve

00:06:04:06 - 00:06:07:19
as a starting point
for your own positioning and sizing rules,

00:06:08:06 - 00:06:11:17
and we'll investigate these options
individually

00:06:11:17 - 00:06:14:17
in a later tutorial.

00:06:16:03 - 00:06:17:14
Now each field within

00:06:17:14 - 00:06:20:14
the group has a section on this page.

00:06:20:21 - 00:06:23:29
If you click on Advanced settings
on one of those particular field,

00:06:25:09 - 00:06:28:09
you can see and control the margins

00:06:28:09 - 00:06:32:01
and the size behavior of this field
relative to other fields

00:06:32:08 - 00:06:35:08
or the boundaries that are surrounding it.

00:06:35:10 - 00:06:38:20
Worth noting as well
that if the system hasn't picks

00:06:38:20 - 00:06:42:01
the fields up in the correct order,
you can change the order

00:06:42:10 - 00:06:45:20
on this page further up
the list gives them higher priority.

00:06:51:18 - 00:06:52:06
Depending on the

00:06:52:06 - 00:06:55:16
advanced options
selected, such as horizontal or vertical.

00:06:55:19 - 00:06:58:24
You will see different options
displayed within here, controlling

00:06:58:24 - 00:07:02:08
different margins and different size
parameters of that field.

00:07:03:02 - 00:07:06:02
Now in our example
where we have horizontal selected,

00:07:06:04 - 00:07:09:28
we have inputs for control of the left
or right margin.

00:07:12:05 - 00:07:13:17
Along with the width

00:07:13:17 - 00:07:16:17
value of the field itself.

00:07:17:00 - 00:07:20:09
And of course if you had vertical selected
you might see top and bottom.

00:07:20:13 - 00:07:23:13
And then the height size.

00:07:26:03 - 00:07:26:27
Now the margin

00:07:26:27 - 00:07:30:03
input allows you
to control the spacing between this field

00:07:30:08 - 00:07:33:04
and what other is to the left
or the right of it.

00:07:33:04 - 00:07:36:04
This could be another field,
or it could be the boundary.

00:07:36:06 - 00:07:40:11
There's going to be a separate tutorial
which goes through how exactly this works

00:07:40:20 - 00:07:42:00
in a bit more detail.

00:07:43:15 - 00:07:44:26
There are also multiple ways

00:07:44:26 - 00:07:48:16
in which we can specify the value
or behavior of these margins.

00:07:48:29 - 00:07:52:03
In addition, we can directly control
the width of our field.

00:07:52:13 - 00:07:55:13
Again, we can do this in multiple ways.

00:07:57:03 - 00:07:58:03
So let's look at changing

00:07:58:03 - 00:08:01:03
the behavior
of these particular margins or size.

00:08:01:04 - 00:08:04:04
We could do this
by clicking on this dropdown list here.

00:08:04:20 - 00:08:08:14
So this specifically is for the left
margin of our left text field.

00:08:08:14 - 00:08:11:14
So this margin here.

00:08:11:18 - 00:08:15:15
And you can see
we've got options for self value or auto.

00:08:17:16 - 00:08:19:01
So the self option.

00:08:19:01 - 00:08:23:04
So this means the margin relative position
or size will not be changed

00:08:23:04 - 00:08:26:04
by the algorithm
from the field's current value.

00:08:27:05 - 00:08:29:19
If we select a value here
that's the direct

00:08:29:19 - 00:08:33:07
specification of the margin
or the size parameter.

00:08:33:27 - 00:08:38:01
And this will override the field's current
position if you require it to do so.

00:08:40:08 - 00:08:40:18
We have

00:08:40:18 - 00:08:44:18
auto so the margins or the field size

00:08:44:18 - 00:08:48:00
will automatically calculate
to fit the space within the group.

00:08:48:16 - 00:08:52:27
This is a weighted value allowing you
to provide priority to certain spaces.

00:08:54:09 - 00:08:56:21
And then if we come to the size parameter

00:08:56:21 - 00:08:59:21
there
you'll see that we have a content option.

00:08:59:22 - 00:09:03:18
So this allows us to control the size
of a field based on the content within it.

00:09:03:29 - 00:09:06:29
And this can be applied to both text
and image fields.

00:09:08:03 - 00:09:11:21
Now again we'll have a later tutorial
which goes through some of these options

00:09:11:21 - 00:09:15:16
in a bit more detail to hopefully clarify
how each one of those works.

00:09:17:14 - 00:09:20:28
One final note
when configuring this set of options here,

00:09:21:03 - 00:09:25:01
we do need to make sure
that the individual text

00:09:25:01 - 00:09:28:01
field size
constraints are changed from fixed.

00:09:28:04 - 00:09:30:24
In order to be able
to change the size of the box.

00:09:30:24 - 00:09:34:03
So if I change that from fixed
to the relevant setting.

00:09:34:14 - 00:09:36:20
So for this example
it could just be horizontal.

00:09:41:18 - 00:09:43:28
That will allow us to resize the field.

Advanced Grouping in Infigo Invent for InDesign | IV_027

In this tutorial, we will investigate the setup and use of Invent's Advanced Grouping features.

These features allow you to align, resize, and space grouped items with precision, offering enhanced layout control and dynamic content-based resizing for a streamlined design process.

Firstly, we'll take a look at how to configure these advanced groups. Then, we'll take a look at some examples of them in action, to better understand how they can be effectively configured.

Creation Date: Jun 05, 2024
Created By: Sam Webster

1. Fields

These features work by utilising InDesigns grouping feature for fields. These groups can be enabled inside Invent (ensuring it considers them dynamic fields). This then opens up additional configuration options.

In our example we have four fields. These consist of:

  • 2 x text fields

  • 1 x populated image field, with image in place

  • 1 x placeholder image frame

The placeholder image frame is optional and will be used to define the boundary of the group in greater detail than simply relying on the boundary created when grouping the main fields.

If using an image frame as a boundary, it is essential it is empty. Invent will not recognise it as a possible boundary field if it is not empty.

Fields

2. Navigate to the Properties tab in Infigo Invent

Our next job is to ensure that all of these fields are enabled in Infigo Invent. Enabling them ensures Invent sees the fields as variable. This is also a requirement should you with to enable the entire group of fields.

Navigate to the Properties tab in Infigo Invent

3. Enable each of the fields, including the boundary fields

For image frames, we choose either Image or Barcode based on their contents

Enable each of the fields, including the boundary fields

4. Enable each of the fields, including the boundary fields

For text fields, we are simply enabling or disabling the field

Enable each of the fields, including the boundary fields

5. Create the group if you haven't already

Next we will create our group of fields in InDesign.

Position the fields, select them all and right click. InDesign has an option in the resulting list named "Group".

If using a boundary field to control the group boundary, unsure that it is correctly placed around your other fields and is included when you create the group.

Once again, the boundary field is optional. You can simply rely on the group boundary created by the main fields, if you wish.

Create the group if you haven't already

6. It is recommended to rename the group in the "Layers" tab within InDesign.

This is not an essential step, however is highly recommended to make things easier for you in the future!

7. Slow double click on the group name in the "Layers" tab to rename it. As you would rename a file in windows explorer.

9. With the group still selected, navigate to the Advance Options tab

Many of the other options available within the group are covered in other tutorials within the Infigo Academy.

10. Adjustments can be made horizontally, vertically or both

These options allow you to specifically control which margins and which size parameters (height/width) are controlled using this functionality.

In our example, we'll stick to "Adjust Horizontally" as all of our grouped fields are in a horizontal configuration.

Adjustments can be made horizontally, vertically or both

11. If required, select a field to use as a boundary

Only empty image frames will be displayed. Once selected as a boundary item, subsequent options for this field will be hidden. Once moved to MegaEdit, the boundary field will not be selectable by end users.

If required, select a field to use as a boundary

12. Infigo provide a few default size and positioning options for the group. These will automatically modify the settings of each individual field, seen in the groups of settings below this section.

These are provided as some default, common options either to utilise or to serve as a starting point for your own positioning and sizing rules.

We will investigate these options in a later tutorial.

14. Depending on the advanced option selected (such as horizontal or vertical) you will see different options displayed within here controlling different margins and different size parameters of that field.

In our example, where Horizontal is selected, we have inputs for control of the left or right margin, along with the width of the field.

The margin inputs allow you to control the spacing between this field and whatever is to the left or right of it. This could be another field, or it could be the boundary.

There are multiple ways in which we can specify the value or behaviour of these margins. In addition, we can directly control the width of our field (again, in multiple ways).

15. We can change the behaviour of a particular margin or size by clicking the dropdown list associated with it.

A few different options may be associated with these lists. Here's a brief overview of what these different options entail:

  • Self | The margin, relative position or size will not be changed by the algorithm from the field's current value.

  • Value | Direct specification of size or margin. This will override the field's current position, if required.

  • Auto | Size or margins automatically calculated to fit the space within the group. This is a weighted value, allowing you to provide priority to certain spaces.

  • Content | Size the field based on the content within it. This can be applied to both text and image fields.

We can change the behaviour of a particular margin or size by clicking the dropdown list associated with it.
