Lesson 1 of 5 | 2 min

The old way and the new way

See what Preview and Publish replace, and what they do for you.

  1. The old way

To get a template onto your storefront you exported a .mex file from Invent, signed in to the admin area, opened the MegaEdit product (or created one), and uploaded the file on its Import page. Then you opened the product in the editor to test it. Every change meant doing it all again.

  2. The new way

In the Invent panel, Preview and Publish send the template to your storefront for you. Preview opens it in the editor. Publish creates a new product from it, or replaces the template of a product you already have.

Animation: the old route of five steps, repeated after every change, compared with one click on Preview or Publish in Invent

Lesson 2 of 5 | 5 min

Connect Invent to your storefront

Copy the InDesign key from Connected Apps, then enter your storefront address and the key in the Invent Settings. You do this once.

Tip

You need an administrator who has access to Connected Apps for the first step. The key works like a password: share it only with the people who build templates for this storefront. Each storefront has its own key, so copy the key from the storefront whose address you will enter in the Settings.

  1. Open Connected Apps

Sign in to your storefront's admin area as an administrator. In the admin menu, click Configuration (scroll down the menu if you do not see Integrations / API), then Integrations / API, then Connected Apps.

The Connected Apps page with the InDesign card and its Copy button highlighted
  2. On the InDesign card, click Copy to copy the API key. Do not click Rotate token: it creates a new key, and the old one stops working straight away for everyone who uses Invent with this storefront.

  3. Open the panel menu

In InDesign, open the Infigo Invent panel. Click the small menu icon at the top right of the panel.

  4. Open the Settings

    In the menu, click Settings.

The Infigo Invent panel menu with Settings highlighted
  5. Enter your storefront address and the key

In Infigo Platform URL, enter the web address of your storefront, the same address you use to open it in a browser, for example https://yourstore.infigo.net. If your storefront's address has a path after the domain name, include it, but leave off any page name. Although the label says platform, use your storefront's address. In Infigo API Token, paste the key you copied: the API key on the Connected Apps card and the API token are the same thing. The hint text under the fields mentions the platform and Configuration > API Tokens. Ignore it and use the Connected Apps key. Leave Infigo Customer ID empty: it fills itself in the first time you preview.

  6. Click Save.

  7. Open the Export tab and click Start Validations. When they pass, the Preview and Publish buttons appear (see Part 2). To check the connection, run a preview.

Part 2: Use it

Lesson 3 of 5 | 4 min

Preview your template in the editor

Open your template in the storefront editor to check how it behaves before you publish it.

Tip

Previewing adds an unpublished product called Invent Preview to your catalogue. Customers cannot see these products, and you can delete the ones you no longer need when you have finished testing.

  1. Run the validations

Open your template in InDesign. In the Invent panel, click the Export tab, then click Start Validations. Fix anything it reports.

The Export tab with the Start Validations button highlighted
  2. Click Preview

When the validations pass, the Preview, Publish and Export buttons appear. Click Preview. Invent saves the document, sends the template to your storefront and shows its progress in the panel. The Export File box can stay empty: only Export needs it.

The Export tab with the Preview and Publish buttons highlighted
  3. Test it in the editor

The template opens in the editor in a separate window on top of InDesign. This can take a minute. Try the fields the way a customer would: check that each field changes the design, and that fonts, colours, dropdowns and dates behave as you expect. You do not need to click the editor's own Preview button. Close the window when you have finished.

  4. Find the preview product

In the admin area, open Catalogue, then Products, then Product Management. In the Product Name or SKU box, search for Invent Preview: the products appear there as unpublished MegaEdit products, and you can delete the ones you no longer need.

Publish as a new product

Create a new product on your storefront from your template.

Note

A new product starts with a price of 0 and no category. Leave Published unticked, set its price and category in the admin, and publish it from there when it is ready.

  1. In the Export tab, run Start Validations, then click Publish.

  2. Name the product

If Product ID shows a number, delete it so the box is empty: the dialog remembers the last ID you used, and a number there replaces that product's template instead of creating a new product. Enter a Product Name and leave Published unticked. Click Publish.

The Publish to Storefront dialog with Product ID empty and a Product Name entered
  3. Watch it go

Invent saves the document, sends the template to your storefront and imports it. A message tells you the product has been published, and the editor opens on it. Close the editor window.

  4. Find the product in the admin area

Open Catalogue, then Products, then Product Management. In the Product Name or SKU box, type the product's name and click Search, then pick the row whose name matches exactly. It is a MegaEdit product with a price of 0, and its Published column shows a red cross: customers cannot see it yet.

  5. Set it up and publish it

Click Edit. Set its price, category and other details as you would for any product, then tick Published and click Save when it is ready.

Update an existing product

Replace the template of a MegaEdit product you already have with your latest version.

Note

Publishing to an existing product replaces its template, and there is no undo. If the product is live, customers get the new template, so keep your previous InDesign document in case you need to publish it again, and try the new one on a copy first. Duplicating products shows how to make a copy.

  1. Find the product ID

In the admin area, open the Catalogue menu, then Products, then Product Management, find your product and click Edit. The page address ends with /Product/Edit/ followed by the product's ID, for example /Product/Edit/1234. Use this number, not the number shown on the MegaEdit Products list: they are different. The product must be a MegaEdit product on the same storefront as the key and address in your Settings.

  2. In InDesign, open the Export tab, run Start Validations, then click Publish.

  3. Enter the product ID

Type the Product ID. The dialog remembers the last ID you used, so check the number before you continue. When an ID is entered, the name and published options are not shown. Click Publish.

The Publish to Storefront dialog with an existing Product ID entered
  4. The product keeps its name, price, SKU, categories and published setting. Its template is replaced. If you renamed or removed fields, open the product in the editor to check the template works as you expect.

  5. Check the template was replaced

In the admin area, open the product and click MegaEdit config, then Mex Import. You do not need to upload anything here: just read Mex File Details below the upload box. It shows the file Invent uploaded and the date and time it was updated.

Troubleshooting

Something not working? Search for your problem, or pick a question below.

Setting up

I can't see the Preview and Publish buttons

Check that both Infigo Platform URL and Infigo API Token are filled in and saved in the Invent Settings. Then open the Export tab and click Start Validations. The buttons appear after you run the validations and they pass. If they still do not appear, update Invent to the latest version: see Updating Invent.

I can't find Connected Apps

Connected Apps needs an administrator who has access to it. Sign in to your storefront's admin area with that account, then open Configuration > Integrations / API > Connected Apps.

The key stopped working

If someone clicked Rotate token on the Connected Apps page, the old key no longer works for anyone using Invent with this storefront. Copy the new key from the InDesign card and paste it into Infigo API Token in the Invent Settings. Each storefront has its own key, so also check that the key comes from the storefront whose address you entered.

Preview and publish

The editor window shows an error page

Check Infigo Platform URL in the Invent Settings. It must be the web address of your storefront, the one you open in a browser. Correct it, save, and try again.

Preview failed: MEX import failed on server

Your storefront could not import the template. Very large images in the template are one cause we have seen. Reduce the size of large background or clipart images, check the package size in the Export tab, run the validations again and try again. The package size limit is covered in increasing the maximum file size for MEX packages.

Preview failed: 503 Service Unavailable

Your storefront could not answer at that moment. Wait a minute and try again.

The editor stays on Loading

The editor can take a minute to open. If it stays on Loading, close the window and click Preview again.

My catalogue has Invent Preview products

Previewing adds an unpublished Invent Preview product. Customers cannot see them. Delete the ones you no longer need in the admin area.

I published a new product but an existing product changed

The Publish dialog remembers the last Product ID. If a number was still in the box, Invent replaced that product's template. Publish the previous template to that product again to put it back, and clear Product ID before you create a new product.

Publishing to an existing product is refused

The product ID must belong to a MegaEdit product on the same storefront as the key and address in your Settings. A product of another type, or one from a different storefront, is refused. Open the product from Catalogue > Products > Product Management, check its ID in the page address, and try again. The number on the MegaEdit Products list is not the product ID.

Publish says MegaEdit is not enabled

Preview and Publish create and update MegaEdit products, so MegaEdit must be available on the storefront. You may see this message on your first preview as well as when you publish. Check that the address in Infigo Platform URL is the storefront you meant to use. If it is, MegaEdit is not available on that storefront.

About this topic

What this does

Preview and Publish to Storefront send your Invent template from InDesign to your storefront. Preview opens it in the editor so you can test it. Publish creates a new product from it, or replaces the template of a product that already exists.

What you need

  • An administrator who has access to Connected Apps, to copy the InDesign key.
  • The web address of the storefront you are publishing to. The key and the address must be for the same storefront.
  • MegaEdit on your storefront, and the latest version of Invent (see Updating Invent below).
  • A template in the Invent panel that passes the validations.
