Tutorial Video Transcript

00:00:05:15 - 00:00:08:03
In this tutorial, we'll learn of Invents
capability

00:00:08:03 - 00:00:12:06
to create barcode fields
and link them to your Invent variables.

00:00:13:03 - 00:00:17:08
So I'm starting off with a brand
new document, and I'm going to begin

00:00:17:08 - 00:00:21:20
just by creating a new rectangular frame
within our InDesign

00:00:21:20 - 00:00:24:20
file.

00:00:28:21 - 00:00:30:02
I'm going over to Infigo

00:00:30:02 - 00:00:33:02
Invent I'm
going to go to the properties tab.

00:00:33:29 - 00:00:36:16
And here you'll see a dropdown
allowing you to select

00:00:36:16 - 00:00:39:19
between static image or barcode.

00:00:41:13 - 00:00:43:26
So static

00:00:43:26 - 00:00:45:29
this will mean any exported mex file

00:00:45:29 - 00:00:49:10
does not consider
this selected field to be a variable.

00:00:49:24 - 00:00:54:03
It will be on selectable and it'll be
flattened into the background layer.

00:00:55:25 - 00:00:56:20
So you've got image.

00:00:56:20 - 00:00:59:26
This will give you access
to the usual Invent image options,

00:00:59:26 - 00:01:03:18
such as being able to link
the frame to a clip art gallery

00:01:04:19 - 00:01:07:19
or uploaded album imagery.

00:01:09:01 - 00:01:10:09
And then we have barcode.

00:01:10:09 - 00:01:11:10
This gives you the ability

00:01:11:10 - 00:01:15:14
to define the contents of a barcode,
either with static content

00:01:15:24 - 00:01:19:21
or links to other variables
specified in your Invent file.

00:01:20:09 - 00:01:24:08
You will never see the barcode
generated inside InDesign itself.

00:01:24:16 - 00:01:29:07
However, it will be generated once
it's moved to MegaEdit via a mex file.

00:01:30:10 - 00:01:33:10
So I'm going to select barcode

00:01:33:18 - 00:01:36:18
and I'm going to begin on the general tab.

00:01:36:27 - 00:01:41:03
So this tab allows you to control settings
more related to the frame itself

00:01:41:17 - 00:01:44:08
rather than its particular contents.

00:01:44:08 - 00:01:49:25
So here for example, you can see
how you can restrict the end users ability

00:01:50:19 - 00:01:53:22
to interact with the frame
in certain ways, for example.

00:01:54:07 - 00:01:57:19
You can also do things such as controlling
the background of the frame.

00:02:00:10 - 00:02:02:22
I'm going to go to the barcode tab.

00:02:02:22 - 00:02:04:22
We'll start off with the type dropdown.

00:02:04:22 - 00:02:09:07
This lets you switch between the type of
barcode that you would like to generate.

00:02:10:00 - 00:02:13:07
Most barcode types
will allow you to input a standard value.

00:02:13:14 - 00:02:17:04
This is simply one input
where you can either input static text

00:02:17:16 - 00:02:20:24
or you can switch to the selection

00:02:20:24 - 00:02:23:24
of any variables that you've defined
in your Invent product.

00:02:24:13 - 00:02:27:13
And we'll take a look at this again later.

00:02:29:13 - 00:02:31:27
QR codes, on the other hand,

00:02:31:27 - 00:02:34:27
will give you some additional options,

00:02:34:28 - 00:02:38:23
such as being able to access
an advanced mode of data input.

00:02:38:24 - 00:02:41:24
And this allows data to be entered
into specifically defined

00:02:41:25 - 00:02:44:25
fields.

00:02:45:10 - 00:02:46:18
So let's take a look at a few of these.

00:02:46:18 - 00:02:49:16
If I switch to advanced
and we'll start off with advanced.

00:02:49:16 - 00:02:51:10
And then the type as text.

00:02:53:11 - 00:02:56:03
So this allows you to input a phone number
and a body.

00:02:56:03 - 00:02:59:06
Either is a static text
or linked to a variable.

00:03:02:11 - 00:03:05:11
The next advanced option we have is email.

00:03:08:05 - 00:03:08:22
This allows you

00:03:08:22 - 00:03:11:22
to enter an email address,
a body, and a subject line.

00:03:11:29 - 00:03:14:24
This will allow end users
to automatically launch

00:03:14:24 - 00:03:18:00
a new email
in their selected email application.

00:03:18:04 - 00:03:21:04
And I'm pre-populate
some of the email contents.

00:03:21:06 - 00:03:24:11
And again the contents of these different
sections can be static

00:03:24:18 - 00:03:27:18
or they can be variables.

00:03:29:06 - 00:03:30:22
The final one we have in here

00:03:30:22 - 00:03:33:22
under the advanced
options is business Card.

00:03:35:03 - 00:03:37:02
So this option works as a V card.

00:03:37:02 - 00:03:41:12
When scanned with a phone,
any information entered into those fields

00:03:41:25 - 00:03:44:24
such as the name, email or organization

00:03:44:24 - 00:03:49:06
will be pre-populated into a new contact
entry on that person's device.

00:03:51:28 - 00:03:54:17
So in
our simple example will create a QR code

00:03:54:17 - 00:03:58:20
from a few pieces of information
using the Advanced Business card option.

00:03:59:19 - 00:04:03:12
And we want this information
to be variable based on end user input.

00:04:03:19 - 00:04:07:04
So we'll go ahead and create
a couple of very simple text variables

00:04:07:12 - 00:04:10:12
just to use as an example.

00:04:12:13 - 00:04:15:16
So here we've created the first name
and last name text variables.

00:04:15:16 - 00:04:18:16
No advanced
configuration was necessary at all.

00:04:23:03 - 00:04:24:15
So with that done, I'm going to make sure

00:04:24:15 - 00:04:28:10
the field is still selected
and go back to the properties tab.

00:04:29:09 - 00:04:34:03
So if you are linking it to specific
fields, such as if you are creating a

00:04:35:10 - 00:04:38:09
a V card using the Advanced Business card
option, here

00:04:38:09 - 00:04:41:27
you want to locate the relevant field for
the information you're trying to input.

00:04:43:12 - 00:04:43:23
And then

00:04:43:23 - 00:04:46:23
instead of it saying
texts have a first name here, for example,

00:04:46:24 - 00:04:50:15
we're going to switch that to variable
and select the variable I want to link to.

00:04:53:19 - 00:04:55:27
I do the same for last name.

00:04:55:27 - 00:04:58:21
And then I'm also going
to input the organization information.

00:04:58:21 - 00:05:00:22
But this is going to be
a static piece of text

00:05:00:22 - 00:05:03:22
that the end user won't be able to modify.

00:05:10:28 - 00:05:14:01
So at the time of creating this content
for any field

00:05:14:01 - 00:05:18:06
that you do not wish to populate,
please put a space in that field.

00:05:19:08 - 00:05:22:13
Invent will not allow you
to export the mex file whilst it contains

00:05:22:13 - 00:05:25:13
empty barcode fields.

00:05:26:29 - 00:05:29:21
Let's scroll down a bit further,
just to point of notes that there are

00:05:29:21 - 00:05:32:29
some additional configuration options
available in the barcode.

00:05:32:29 - 00:05:37:05
Properties area allows you to do things
such as changing the text color,

00:05:37:17 - 00:05:40:07
modifying the human readable interface.

00:05:40:07 - 00:05:44:20
So if you do have some text of the barcode
contents written underneath

00:05:44:20 - 00:05:48:24
the barcode itself, for example,
you can either activate or disable that.

00:05:49:01 - 00:05:52:03
And if you do activate it,
you can modify its properties.

00:05:52:28 - 00:05:57:06
And you can change the barcode size and you can change the padding options as well.

00:06:00:22 - 00:06:03:14
So in my basic
example here, I'm also going to configure

00:06:03:14 - 00:06:07:03
a text field
displaying those variable values.

00:06:07:15 - 00:06:09:02
This is purely for clarity.

00:06:09:02 - 00:06:12:06
When we look at it in MegaEdit,
and is not a requirement

00:06:12:06 - 00:06:15:06
of using the barcode functionality.

00:06:17:12 - 00:06:20:12
Now I'm going to export the Invent file
as a mex template

00:06:20:19 - 00:06:23:19
and import it into MegaEdit.

00:06:26:23 - 00:06:29:23
We can see there that the QR code
is successfully generated,

00:06:29:28 - 00:06:32:24
and it automatically updates to reflect

00:06:32:24 - 00:06:35:23
the information
placed into the linked variables.

3. Here, you will see a dropdown allowing you to select between Static, Image or Barcode.

"Static" will mean any exported MEX file does not consider this field to be variable. It will be unelectable and flattened into the background layer.

"Image" will give you access to the usual Invent image options, such as being able to link the frame to a clipart gallery or uploaded album imagery.

"Barcode" gives you the ability to define the contents of a barcode, either with static content or linked to other variables specified in your Invent file. You will never see the barcode generated inside InDesign itself, however it will be generated once moved to MegaEdit via MEX file.
