Changing a product attribute (size, color) after an order is placed

Once an order has been placed, and there is no approval workflow holding it, you cannot edit the customer’s selected product attributes on the existing order line. The system does not support swapping an attribute selection after the order is submitted.

Best practice options

Option 1: Cancel and reorder (recommended)
The supported approach is to cancel the order line, or the full order if needed, and place a new order with the correct size selected. This keeps everything accurate and aligned, including pricing, stock, reporting, and production. This is done within the Admin > Sales > Orders area.

Option 2: Manual handling (not ideal)
If cancelling is not practical, you can add a note to the order and manage the change manually outside the system. Be aware this can create discrepancies if it is not tracked very carefully, especially around stock and fulfilment.

Note about approval workflows (context)

If an approval workflow is in use and an order is still in an approval stage, there can be a small window where approvers can amend certain details, such as quantities or cancelling lines. Even then, changing an attribute usually means cancelling that line and creating a new one with the correct attribute.
