Auto-generate attribute combinations with one click

Admins managing large product catalogues with many attribute values previously had to create attribute combinations one at a time or use the Import/Export workflow to add them in bulk. There was also no guard against creating duplicate combinations manually, which could cause data inconsistencies.

How to use the Generate button to create attribute combinations in bulk

Summary

The Generate button on Product Variant and Product Group pages creates all missing attribute combinations automatically from a selected set of attributes.

Problem

Admins need to create many attribute combinations for products with multiple attribute values, but creating them one at a time is time-consuming. The Generate button automates this process.

Environment

Admin area: product editing page > Product Variant or Product Group section > Attribute area > Attribute Combinations.

Configuration

The Generate button on a product's Attribute Combinations tab creates all missing attribute combinations automatically from a selected set of attributes, so you no longer need to build combinations one at a time or use import/export for simple cases. Existing combinations are never duplicated. Generation only adds what is missing.

Step 1: Open the Attribute Combinations tab on a product variant

In admin, open the product and navigate to its Product Variant page, then click the Attributes tab followed by the Attribute Combinations sub-tab. The Generate button sits next to Add New and Import / Export above the combinations grid. This screenshot uses a training product with two eligible dropdown attributes (Color and Size, 2 values each) and no combinations generated yet.

Step 2: Click Generate and select attributes

Clicking Generate opens the 'Generate Attribute Combinations' popup shown below, listing every eligible attribute on the product with its number of values (attributes without a fixed list of values, such as free-text fields, are not shown). Tick the attributes you want included, then click Generate in the popup to confirm.

Step 3: Review the generated combinations

The platform creates every missing combination of the selected attributes' values. 2 Color values x 2 Size values produced the 4 combinations shown here, each with the default stock quantity of 10,000 and backorders disabled. Existing combinations are never duplicated, and running Generate again with the same selection produces no additional rows. Edit any combination afterward to set a specific SKU, price, or stock level.
