Summary
A discount that uses the "Customer has previously purchased one of these product variants" requirement only applies once the qualifying earlier order reaches Completed status. If that order is still Processing, Refunded, or any other non-completed status, the discount will not apply.
Problem
A discount code set up with the "Customer has previously purchased one of these product variants" requirement is not applying at checkout, even though the customer has an earlier order for the qualifying product variant. The discount and its restricted product variant ID appear to be configured correctly, but the code does not reduce the cart total when applied.

Cause
This requirement only counts a previous order once it reaches Completed status. While the qualifying order is still in Processing status, the requirement is not satisfied and the discount will not apply; once that order is set to Completed, the discount applies on the next qualifying order. Any other non-completed order status, including Refunded, will not satisfy the requirement either, since only Completed orders are counted. The requirement matches on the product variant ID only, not the product ID.
Resolution
- Navigate to the order that should qualify as the previous purchase.
- Confirm the order status is Completed. If it is still Processing, Refunded, or any other non-completed status, the discount requirement will not be satisfied.
- If the order is not yet Completed, update its status to Completed.
- Once the qualifying order shows Completed status, the discount code will apply on the customer's next order for that product variant.
