Custom names can now be assigned to any basket/cart line, including stock products. The settings that control this feature are visible in Catalogue Settings, and a product attribute can be linked directly to the custom name field so customers set the name on the product page rather than in the basket.

Configuration

Custom names can now be assigned to any basket line, including stock products. The controls that previously governed this feature were hidden platform settings that an administrator had to know by name; they are now four visible settings in the Custom names section of Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings, alongside a new option specifically for stock products. Existing configuration is migrated automatically on deployment, so every storefront behaves exactly as it did before. This guide shows where each setting lives on the Catalogue Settings page, what it does, and how to link a product attribute directly to the custom name field so customers set the name on the product page rather than in the basket.

Step 1: Open the Catalogue Settings and find the Custom names section

Go to Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings and scroll to the Custom names section. This is where all four custom name controls now live in the standard admin interface, replacing the hidden platform settings used previously. If you used custom names before the upgrade, your existing configuration has already been migrated here automatically, so no reconfiguration is required.

Step 2: Turn on Enable custom names

Tick Enable custom names to let customers assign a custom name to a basket line via the Enter new name modal for supported product types. When it is off, the option is not offered in the basket. Save the page after changing it.

Step 3: Optionally require custom names

Tick Require custom names to make a custom name mandatory before a customer can proceed to checkout. This applies to the basket Enter new name modal only, not to attribute-linked names. Leave it off if a custom name should remain optional. Save the page after changing it.

Step 4: Optionally require custom names on stock products

Tick Require custom names on stock products to extend the mandatory requirement specifically to stock product lines. This is new and is off by default, so turning on Require custom names on its own keeps covering the same product types it did before the upgrade. Enable this only when you also want stock product lines to demand a custom name. Save the page after changing it.

Step 5: Optionally show custom names instead of product names

Tick Show custom names instead of product names to display the custom name in place of the product name throughout admin order views, the shopping cart, customer views, and print operations. This helps identify personalised items by the name the customer gave them. Leave it off to keep showing product names. Save the page after changing it.

Step 6: Link a product attribute to the custom name field

To let a customer set the name on the product page instead of in the basket, create or edit a product attribute (Catalogue > Attributes > Product Attributes) and set its Attribute link field to Custom Name. Only a textbox control type is allowed for this link, and each product can have only one attribute linked to the custom name. Then add that attribute to the product, choosing the Textbox control type. When configured, the attribute value is transferred automatically to the order line, independently of the global Enable custom names setting; whether it is mandatory is governed by the attribute's own mandatory configuration.

Step 7: The customer sets the name on the product page

When an attribute is linked to the custom name, the field appears on the product page itself. The customer types the name there before adding the item to the basket, and it is carried onto the order line automatically. In this example a Recipient Name field has been linked on the A5 Flyers product.

Step 8: Or the customer names a basket line directly

For supported product types without a linked attribute, and with Enable custom names on, the customer names the line in the basket. Each line shows a Name value with an Edit button that opens the Enter the new name box. This now works for Stock products too, shown here on an A2 Posters line.

Step 9: See the custom names on the basket lines

Both routes end up on the order line. In our examples, the A2 Posters line carries the name set through the basket box and keeps its Edit button, while the A5 Flyers line shows the name taken from its linked attribute and has no basket Edit, because the attribute governs it. With Show custom names instead of product names on, the custom name is what appears on the line.

Settings Added or Changed

Four settings have been added under the Custom names section of Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings:

  • Enable custom names — controls whether customers can assign a custom name to a basket line via the Enter new name modal for supported product types.

  • Require custom names — when on, customers must provide a custom name before proceeding to checkout. This applies to the basket modal only, not to attribute-linked names.

  • Require custom names on stock products — extends the requirement specifically to stock product lines.

  • Show custom names instead of product names — when on, custom names replace product names in admin order views, the shopping cart, and print operations.

In addition, a Textbox product attribute can be given an Attribute Link of Custom Name on a per-product basis to feed the custom name from the product page.
