Overview

When a basket comes to nothing - free samples, a fully discounted order - there is nothing to pay, so the payment step only slows the customer down. With Show payment methodOne of the forms of payment available to the customers of a particular Storefront. selection and details when cart is 0 left unticked, free baskets skip the payment step.

What it does

  • No payment step for free baskets - the customer goes from their address straight to Confirm order.
  • Paid baskets unchanged - any order with a total above zero still shows the payment step.

How it works

  • Checkout Settings > Payment Selection and Order Settings both have Show payment method selection and details when cart is 0. Unticked (the default) skips payment when the total is zero.

Good to know

  • Free products and baskets reduced to zero by a discount are both treated as free.
  • Keep the option unticked in both places.

Step-by-step

  1. Leave payment selection off for free baskets

Go to Configuration > Settings > Checkout Settings. Under Payment Selection, make sure Show payment method selection and details when cart is 0 is unticked. The same option also appears in Order Settings - keep it unticked there too. This is the default. Save if you changed anything, then Clear cache.

  3. The checkout starts as usual

The customer confirms their billing address (and delivery details, if the order needs delivery).

  4. No payment step - straight to Confirm order

Because the total is GBP 0.00, the Payment information step is skipped and the customer goes straight to Confirm order. Orders with a total above zero still show the payment step.
