Summary
Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings > Default Product Display Settings sets storefront-wide defaults for the display options on a product's Display settings tab, including Breadcrumbs. Any product whose option is left on Inherit uses the default, and new products start on Inherit.
Problem
You want breadcrumbs, or another product display option, to be the same on many products, for example when setting up a new storefront with a lot of products, without opening every product to change it.
Environment
Admin area > Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings > Default Product Display Settings, and the Display settings tab on each product.
Configuration
Step 1: Open Catalogue Settings
In the admin area, go to Configuration > Settings > Catalogue Settings. Click Configuration, then Settings, to open those menu groups, then click Catalogue Settings. If you cannot see Catalogue Settings, your account does not have access to it: ask an administrator who has access, or Infigo Customer Support. The page opens on the General tab.
Step 2: Open the Default Product Display Settings tab
Click the Default Product Display Settings tab, next to General. If you do not see this tab, ask Infigo Customer Support to check it is available for your storefront. An information box at the top explains the tab: the values here are used by every product whose display setting is left as Inherit.
Step 3: Choose the default for each setting
The tab lists the same display options as the Display settings tab on a product, for example Breadcrumbs, Product title position, Price position, Hide product tags and Hide product image. Set each one to the value you want most products to use; settings you leave alone keep their current default. Breadcrumbs only appear on product pages while Category breadcrumb enabled is ticked on the General tab of this same page, whatever the defaults say. To show breadcrumbs on your products, set Breadcrumbs to Show breadcrumbs. The other choices are Hide breadcrumbs, Show back to parent button and Show breadcrumbs and back to parent button.
Step 4: Save the settings
Click Save at the top of the page. A green message confirms the settings were updated, and the page reloads on the General tab, so open Default Product Display Settings again if you want to check your values. The defaults apply to the storefront you are working in, and to every product on it whose display setting is left on Inherit.
Step 5: Check that products use the default
Open a product: go to Catalogue > Products > Product Management, search for the product by name (the list stays empty until you search), and click Edit. Click the Display settings tab, which is near the right-hand end of the row of tabs. These settings apply to products that use the Default product template, shown at the top of the tab. Each option now offers Inherit at the top of its list, with the current default in brackets, for example Inherit (Show breadcrumbs). New products start with every display setting on Inherit, so they use your defaults straight away. Products that already existed keep the values they had before; to make one use your defaults, choose Inherit on that product and save it (this is done product by product). Changing a default later changes every product still on Inherit, with no need to open them one by one.
Step 6: Keep a different value on one product
Optional: to make a product ignore the default for one setting, open that product's Display settings tab, choose Yes, No or a specific value instead of Inherit, and save the product. In the example, a second product has Hide breadcrumbs chosen, so it keeps hiding breadcrumbs even though the default is Show breadcrumbs. Changing the default never overwrites a value you chose on a product.
Step 7: Check the product page as a customer
Open the product on your storefront, for example with View product page at the top of the product edit page. A product on Inherit now shows the breadcrumb trail above the product, for example Top / Desk Essentials / Desk Essentials - A5 Notebook. If you set a value of your own on another product as in step 6, that product still follows its own value. If a product does not look as you expect, check its Display settings tab to see whether it is on Inherit or has its own value, and for breadcrumbs check that Category breadcrumb enabled is ticked (step 3).
