Overview

This page walks through one complete product: a business card your customers personalise with their own logo, name, job title, email address and phone number. It covers the essential steps in order and links to the detailed guide for each part, so you can see how everything fits together before going deeper.

How the pieces fit together

  • InDesign - you design the card: size, bleed, artwork and a frame for everything the customer will change.
  • Infigo Invent - the InDesign plugin that turns those frames into fields on a form, and sets the rules for each one.
  • The .mex fileThe export format produced by the Invent InDesign plugin, containing a product template's structure, resources, variables, form logic, and configuration. - Invent exports your template as a .mex package.
  • A MegaEditInfigo's browser-based product personalisation editor, used to build and configure dynamic templates that end users customise online (text, images, clipart, masks, backgrounds, and more).product - you create the product on your storefront and upload the .mex to it.
  • Your customer - fills in the form in the MegaEdit editor and sees their card update as they go.

What you'll build

  • A logo your customer uploads, or picks from a set of logos you provide.
  • Full name, job title, email address and phone number fields, with your labels and help text, filled in from the customer's account where possible.
  • The email address checked against the Email format.
  • A fixed layout: customers change the content, but can't move, resize or delete anything.

Good to know

  • Export to a folder on your computer, not one synced to OneDrive or a similar service.
  • Use a fixed line height in your text frames. Start Validations flags an automatic line height.
  • When you change the template, export again and use Mex Import on the same product. Make sure Update product image is unticked to keep your product pictures.
  • In this sample, the logo frame starts empty with a "Drag image here" prompt until the customer adds a logo.
  • Prefilled details only appear for registered customers who are signed in. Customers can still change them.
TipStart from the sample pack. Replace the artwork and fonts with your own and keep the Invent setup, then follow Validate and export the .mex file and Create the MegaEdit product on the Step-by-step tab.

What's inside

  • BusinessCard.indd - the InDesign template, already set up in Invent (logo, four text fields, locked layout, form order).
  • Links - the card artwork and default logo the template uses.
  • Logos - the two images in the Logos clipart set.
  • BusinessCard.mex - the exported template, ready to upload to a MegaEdit product.
  • README.txt - what's in the pack and how to use it.

The template uses Arial, which is not included. Open it in InDesign with Invent installed and look through each Invent tab, or upload the .mex to a new MegaEdit product straight away.

Step-by-step

  1. Design the card in InDesign

Start with a finished design. This card is 85 x 55 mm with a 3 mm bleed, and it has two layers: Background holds the fixed artwork and is locked, and Editable holds what the customer personalises (a logo frame and four text frames). Put placeholder text in each text frame, such as Full name, and give each frame a clear name in the Layers panel. Use a fixed line height rather than Auto: Invent's validations flag an automatic line height.

  2. Open the Infigo Invent panel

Invent works through one panel with five tabs. Resources holds images, fonts and colours that variables can use. Variables holds the fields on the customer's form. Properties sets up the selected frame. Setup controls how the product behaves in MegaEdit. Export checks the template and writes the .mex file. If you don't have Invent yet, see Setting up the Invent plugin for InDesign and Invent Basics.

  3. Add a Clipart Set for the logos

In Resources, click Add Resource Set, type a name (here Logos) and choose Clipart Set. Click Add Images / PDF to add the logos customers can pick from, then Save. To offer clipart in an Image Variable, it needs a Clipart Set like this. More detail: Image Variables & Clipart Resource Sets.

  4. Turn a text frame into a form field

Select the Full name frame. In Properties, tick Enable, then click Link to new variable and choose Text Variable. This creates the variable and links it to the frame in one go, and the frame's text becomes the default value.

  5. Name the field and write what the customer sees

Give the variable a short name (FullName), keep Mode on Single Line, and set Prepopulate Data to Full Name so it fills in from the signed-in customer's account. Under UI Info, the Label and Help text are what the customer sees on the form. Click Save. For every option on this screen, including length limits and format checks, see Configuring text inputs.

  6. Repeat for the other text frames

Back in Properties, the frame now shows Type: Variable and the variable it is linked to. Do the same for Job title, Email and Phone. On the card in this guide, Email is prefilled from the account and checked with the Email validation preset, and Phone uses the Mobile prefill option, which fills in the phone number on the customer's account.

0:12 You design the card in InDesign. Invent, the InDesign plugin, turns each frame into a field on a form, and exports the template as a .mex file.

0:23 In your admin area, you create a MegaEdit product and upload the .mex file to it.

0:30 Your customer fills in the form, uploads a logo or picks one from your set, and sees their card update as they go.

0:38 The Step-by-step tab walks through the whole build, with links to the detailed guide for each part. You can also download the finished sample from the Overview tab and use it as your starting point.

Step-by-step video

0:00 Build a business card product, end to end

0:04 In this video we'll build a personalised business card from start to finish. First, how the pieces fit together. You design the card in InDesign. Invent, the plugin for InDesign, turns parts of the design into fields on a form and exports a .mex file. You upload that file to a MegaEdit product on your storefront, and your customer fills in the form and sees their card update. We'll cover each part briefly, and the Step-by-step tab links to a detailed guide for each one.

0:32 Start with a finished design. This card is 85 by 55 millimetres with a 3 millimetre bleed. The artwork sits on a locked background layer, and everything the customer will change sits on an editable layer: a logo frame and four text frames.

0:48 Invent works through one panel with five tabs: Resources, Variables, Properties, Setup and Export. We'll use each of them in turn.

0:58 In Resources, click Add Resource Set, name it Logos, and choose Clipart Set.

1:03 Add the logos customers can pick from, then save. The logo's Image Variable will use this set.

1:11 Now the text. Select the full name frame, open Properties, and tick Enable.

1:16 Click Link to new variable and choose Text Variable. The frame's text becomes the default value.

1:24 Name the variable FullName, prefill it from the customer's account, and write the label and help text the customer sees on the form.

1:32 The frame is now linked to its variable. Do the same for job title, email and phone. The email field also gets the Email validation preset.

1:42 For the logo, go to Variables, click Add Variable, and choose Image Variable.

1:48 Name it Logo. Allow Image Upload lets customers upload their own, and ticking the Logos set offers your clipart as well.

1:56 Select the logo frame, set its type to Image, then map it to the Logo variable.

2:03 On a business card, customers change the content, not the layout. In each frame's General tab, untick rotation, movement, resizing, z-order and deletion.

2:13 The Variables tab now lists five fields: four text and one image.

2:19 Click Setup Forms and arrange the fields: the logo first, then the text fields from top to bottom.

2:26 In Setup, Field, turn off adding text and image fields, so the card keeps exactly the fields you designed.

2:33 In Export, set the export file to a folder on your computer, not a synced folder, and click Start Validations.

2:41 When the validations pass, click Export and confirm the media and font licence message. Invent writes the .mex file.

2:51 Now to your admin area. In Products, click Add new, name the product, set the type to MegaEdit, and upload the .mex as the Invent package.

3:01 Click Create. When the import finishes, open the product.

3:05 Add a short description for the product page.

3:09 Set the price on the product variant. The Step-by-step tab links to the guide for tiered pricing.

3:16 Map it to a category, here Business Cards.

3:20 And add a picture for the catalogue.

3:23 If you change the template later, export again and use Mex Import on the same product, in the MegaEdit Products list.

3:31 Choose the new file and click Import. Leave Update product image unticked to keep your pictures.

3:38 Here's the result on the storefront, in the Business Cards category.

3:43 The editor shows your form: the logo first, then the text fields, with the customer's details already filled in.

3:51 Select Image offers Images, to upload their own logo, or Cliparts, your Logos set.

3:57 Here the customer picks a logo from the set.

4:01 The logo and their name appear on the card straight away.

4:06 That's a complete business card product, from InDesign to your storefront. Download the sample pack from the Overview tab to look through the setup yourself, and use the links on the Step-by-step tab for more detail on each part.
