Overview

This page walks through one complete product: a table talker for a bar or café, printed on one sheet and folded into a tent so it reads from both sides. One form fills both sides. The customer chooses the offer, and the picture changes to match; for a Free Wi-Fi card, the network details replace the price. They can also pick an accent colour from your brand colours. The page covers the essential steps in order and links to the detailed guide for each part.

How the pieces fit together

  • InDesign - you design both panels on one page, with the back panel turned upside down so it reads the right way once folded, and a spot-colour fold line for your printer.
  • Infigo Invent - the InDesign plugin that turns the frames into fields, adds your offer pictures and brand colours, and sets the rule that shows the Wi-Fi details instead of the price.
  • The .mex fileThe export format produced by the Invent InDesign plugin, containing a product template's structure, resources, variables, form logic, and configuration. - Invent exports your template as a .mex package.
  • A MegaEditInfigo's browser-based product personalisation editor, used to build and configure dynamic templates that end users customise online (text, images, clipart, masks, backgrounds, and more). product - you create the product on your storefront and upload the .mex to it.
  • Your customer - fills in one form and sees both sides of the table talker update as they go.

What you'll build

  • Front and back panels filled from one form.
  • An offer dropdown that changes the picture on both sides.
  • A rule that shows the Wi-Fi details instead of the price when the offer is Free Wi-Fi.
  • An accent colour the customer picks from your brand colours.
  • A locked layout, with the fold line in a spot colour for your printer.

Good to know

  • Name each back-panel frame after its front twin (for example Headline back), so the pairs are easy to find in the Properties tab.
  • Give the offer picture files clear names. Customers choose from the pictures, and you pick the file names when you set up the logic.
  • Logic only lists frames you've enabled, so set up the text variables before you add the logic.
  • Keep the fold line on the locked background layer, below the editable frames, drawn as a thin filled rectangle.
  • When you change the template, export again and use Mex Import on the same product. Untick Update product image and Delete old images to keep your product pictures.
TipStart from the sample pack. Swap the logo, offer pictures and colours for your own and keep the Invent setup, then follow Validate and export the .mex file and Create the MegaEdit product on the Step-by-step tab.

What's inside

  • TableTalker.indd - the InDesign template, already set up in Invent (offer dropdown, show/hide rule, brand colours, locked layout).
  • Links - the panel background, logo and default offer picture the template uses.
  • Offer images - the three pictures in the Offer images set.
  • TableTalker.mex - the exported template, ready to upload to a MegaEdit product.
  • README.txt - what's in the pack and how to use it.

The InDesign template uses Arial, which isn't included as a separate file; the .mex contains the font files Invent packages at export.

Step-by-step

  1. Design both panels on one page in InDesign

A table talker is one sheet folded into a tent, so design both sides on one page: here 148 x 420 mm (two A5 panels) with a 3 mm bleed. The front panel is the bottom half. The back panel is the top half, turned 180 degrees so it reads the right way up once the sheet is folded. Put the panel backgrounds, your logos and the fold line on a locked Background layer, and the frames customers change (the offer picture, headline, offer text, price and Wi-Fi details) on an Editable layer above it. Give each back-panel frame the same name with back on the end. The price and the Wi-Fi details sit in the same place, because only one of them shows at a time. Draw the fold line in a spot colour (here Crease, set to overprint) so your printer can use it. Keep it on the locked background layer, drawn as a thin filled rectangle. The fold line keeps its spot colour in the exported background. For spot colours set up inside Invent, see Defining and exporting spot colours from Invent.

  2. Open the Infigo Invent panel

Invent works through one panel with five tabs: Resources, Variables, Properties, Setup and Export. If you're new to Invent, start with the business card build.

  3. Add your brand colours as a Color Set

In Resources, click Add Resource Set, name it (here Bar colours) and choose Color Set. For each colour, click Select Color, enter its CMYK values, type a UI Name (Coral, Juniper, Navy, Gold) and click Add Color. Click Save. More detail: Creating and utilising a Colour Set resource set.

  5. Add the offer pictures with a dropdown

Add another resource set, name it Offer images and choose Clipart Set. Click Add Images / PDF and add one picture per offer. Customers choose from the pictures themselves. You pick the files by name in Setup Logic, so give each one a clear name (here Happy hour, Todays special and Free Wi-Fi). Tick Selecting this option will automatically create a dropdown variable for these resources and click Save. In Variables, edit the new Offer images dropdown: give it the label Offer type, help text, and a Default Resource Item. More detail: Dropdown Variables & Clipart Resource Sets.

  6. Link the front frames, then the back frames to the same variables

Select the front Headline frame. In Properties, tick Enable, click Link to new variable, choose Text Variable, and give it a name, label and help text. Then select Headline back, tick Enable, and under Mapped choose Variable and the same Headline variable. Do the same for the offer text, the price and the Wi-Fi details. Because each back frame uses the same variable as its front twin, one form fills both sides. More detail: Configuring text inputs.

In Variables, click Setup Logic, then Add Logic, and add a description. Click + Add Condition: choose Offer images, Equals, then click the value button and select Free Wi-Fi.png. Under Actions, click + Add Action for each frame: Show both Wi-Fi details frames and Hide both price frames. Click + Add Else and add the opposite: hide the Wi-Fi details and show the prices. Click Save. Only frames you've enabled are listed. More detail: IF Statements with Else and Else IF in Invent and Field Actions: Show / Hide.

Step-by-step video

0:00 Build a table talker product, end to end

0:04 In this video we'll build a two-sided table talker from start to finish. You design it in InDesign. Invent, the plugin for InDesign, turns parts of the design into fields, adds offer pictures, brand colours and a rule, and exports a .mex file. You upload that file to a MegaEdit product, and your customer personalises it in the editor.

0:25 Both panels sit on one page, 148 by 420 millimetres. The front is the bottom half, and the back is the top half, turned upside down so it reads the right way once folded. The backgrounds, logos and a spot-colour fold line sit on a locked layer, under the editable frames.

0:45 In Resources, add a Color Set called Bar colours, with your brand colours.

0:50 Add a Color Variable called Accent. Set its mode to Resource and choose the Bar colours set, so customers can only pick your colours.

0:59 Add a Clipart Set called Offer images, with one picture per offer, and tick the option to create a dropdown for it.

1:07 Edit the new dropdown, label it Offer type, and choose the default offer.

1:13 Link each front text frame to a new Text Variable. Then link its twin on the back panel to the same variable, so one field fills both sides.

1:22 Set both picture frames to Image, and map them to the Offer images dropdown.

1:28 Set the Text Color of the headline and price frames to the Accent variable.

1:34 In Setup Logic, add a rule: if the offer is Free Wi-Fi, show the Wi-Fi details and hide the price.

1:41 Add an Else, and do the reverse, so every other offer shows the price.

1:47 Lock each frame in place, put the form in order, and turn off extra fields in Setup.

1:53 Validate, then export the .mex file and confirm the licence message.

1:59 In Product Management, add a new MegaEdit product and upload the .mex. Then set the price and the category.

2:07 As a customer, change the offer type and the picture changes on both sides. Choose Free Wi-Fi, and the Wi-Fi details replace the price.

2:17 Pick an accent colour, and the headline and price change colour on both panels.

2:22 That's the whole build. Download the sample pack from the Downloads tab to see every setting, or use it as the starting point for your own.
