This page walks through one complete large-format product: a roller banner your customers personalise with a main photo, a headline, a strapline and a website, on a background they choose from your set. It covers the essential steps in order and links to the detailed guide for each part.

How the pieces fit together

  • InDesign - you design the banner at full size: bleed, background artwork with your logo, guides for the safe and stand areas, and a frame for everything the customer will change.
  • Infigo Invent - the InDesign plugin that turns those frames into fields, adds your background and photo sets, and sets the minimum image resolution.
  • The .mex fileThe export format produced by the Invent InDesign plugin, containing a product template's structure, resources, variables, form logic, and configuration. - Invent exports your template as a .mex package.
  • A MegaEditInfigo's browser-based product personalisation editor, used to build and configure dynamic templates that end users customise online (text, images, clipart, masks, backgrounds, and more). product - you create the product on your storefront and upload the .mex to it.
  • Your customer - fills in the form, picks a background and a photo, and sees the banner update as they go.

What you'll build

  • A choice of full-size backgrounds (a Background Set).
  • A main photo the customer uploads or picks from your set, with a warning when an uploaded photo is too small for the banner.
  • A headline and strapline that shrink to fit when the customer writes more.
  • A fixed layout that keeps everything inside the safe area, with your logo on every background.

Good to know

  • Draw your logo into each background image. Choosing a background in MegaEdit replaces the whole locked layer, so a separate logo frame on it would disappear.
  • Keep locked items (fixed text, shapes) on a layer below the editable frames. Invent exports locked items that sit above them as a separate full-page layer, which can stop a large banner displaying in MegaEdit.
  • Mark the safe area and the stand area with ruler guides rather than shapes. Guides aren't exported.
  • Large-format artwork is viewed from a distance, so a lower resolution than for print you hold in your hand is usually fine. Set Minimum Image Resolution to suit your products.
  • Fit to box sizes text to fill its frame, so draw the headline and strapline frames to fit their default text.
  • When you change the template, export again and use Mex Import on the same product. Untick Update product image and Delete old images to keep your product pictures.
TipStart from the sample pack. Swap the backgrounds, photos and logo for your own and keep the Invent setup, then follow Validate and export the .mex file and Create the MegaEdit product on the Step-by-step tab.

What's inside

  • RollerBanner.indd - the full-size InDesign template, already set up in Invent (Background Set, main photo, headline and strapline with Fit to box, locked layout, minimum image resolution).
  • Links - the default background (logo drawn in) and placeholder photo the template uses (in MegaEdit the photo frame starts empty).
  • Backgrounds and Hero photos - the images in the two resource sets.
  • RollerBanner.mex - the exported template, ready to upload to a MegaEdit product.
  • README.txt - what's in the pack and how to use it.

The InDesign template uses Arial, which isn't included as a separate file; the .mex contains the font files Invent packages at export.

Step-by-step

  1. Design the banner at full size in InDesign

Start with a finished design at full size: 850 x 2000 mm with a 5 mm bleed. Put the background artwork, with your logo strip drawn into it, on a locked Background layer at the bottom, and the frames customers fill in (the main photo, headline, strapline and website) on an Editable layer above it. Mark the safe area and the stand area (the bottom of a roller banner sits inside the stand) with ruler guides. Keep locked items below the editable layer: Invent exports anything locked that sits above the editable frames as a separate full-page layer, which can stop a large banner displaying in MegaEdit.

  2. Open the Infigo Invent panel

Invent works through one panel with five tabs: Resources, Variables, Properties, Setup and Export. If you're new to Invent, start with the business card build.

  3. Add a Background Set

In Resources, click Add Resource Set, name it (here Banner backgrounds) and choose Background Set. Click Add Images / PDF and add each full-size background customers can choose, then Save. You can also add plain colours. In MegaEdit these appear in the Background selection panel, and the background on your locked layer is the one the banner starts with. Choosing a background from the set replaces that whole locked layer, so draw your logo into every background image in the set rather than placing it as a separate frame. 4. Add a Clipart Set of photos

Add another resource set, name it Hero photos and choose Clipart Set. Add the photos customers can pick for the main image and click Save. More detail: Image Variables & Clipart Resource Sets.

  5. Add an Image Variable and map the photo frame

In Variables, click Add Variable, choose Image Variable and name it HeroPhoto. Tick Allow Image Upload and the Hero photos set, then Save. Select the photo frame, set its Type to Image, and under Mapped choose Variable > HeroPhoto. More detail: Configuring image variables to accept clipart, uploaded images or both.

  6. Turn the text frames into form fields

Select the Headline frame. In Properties, tick Enable, click Link to new variable, choose Text Variable, and give it a name, label and help text. Do the same for the strapline and the website. More detail: Configuring text inputs.

  7. Make the headline and strapline fit

On the headline and strapline frames, tick Fit to box and Fit to box Wrapping. The text resizes to fill its frame, so a longer headline shrinks to fit and wraps onto a second line. Because the text always fills the frame, draw each frame to fit its default text at the size you want.

  8. Lock the layout

For each editable frame, open Properties > General and, under Restrictions, untick Allow Rotation, Allow Movement, Allow Resizing, Allow Z-order Adjustments and Allow Deletion, so everything stays inside the safe area.

    General > Restrictions

    General > Restrictions
  9. Check the form order

In Variables, click Setup Forms to check the order the fields appear in: the photo first, then the headline, strapline and website. Click Save. More detail: Building a form in Invent for use in MegaEdit.

  10. Set a minimum image resolution

In Setup > Field, untick Allow adding text fields and Allow adding image fields. In Setup > Image, set Minimum Image Resolution; 100 is used here because a banner is seen from a distance. When a customer's photo is below this resolution at the size it's placed on the banner, MegaEdit flags it with The image has low resolution. For the other Setup options, see Invent Problem Solvers.

  11. Validate and export the .mex file

In Export, click Set Export File and choose a folder on your computer, not one synced to OneDrive or a similar service. Click Start Validations, then Export, and confirm the Media and Font License Confirmation. The .mex includes your backgrounds, photos and fonts, so its size grows with the images you add.

  12. Create the MegaEdit product

In Catalogue > Products > Product ManagementAn area of Infigo where administrators can create, edit or delete products on a Storefront., click Add new, type the name, set Product type to MegaEdit, use Upload Invent Package to add the .mex, and click Create. Then set the price on Product variants, map it to a category and add a picture. For other ways to price it, see Pricing Products with Basic, Tiered and Pricing Scripts.

  13. Check it as a customer

Open the product as a customer. The form shows the main photo, headline, strapline and website. Background selection on the left lists your Background Set: click one and the whole banner changes. Select Image offers Images (photos the customer uploads) and Cliparts, where your Hero photos set is listed under the product's name. Upload a small photo and the field is flagged as low resolution. 0:00 Roller banner product - overview

0:03 This page builds one complete large-format product: an 850 by 2000 millimetre roller banner your customers personalise with a photo, a headline, a strapline and a website, on a background they choose.

0:17 You design the banner at full size in InDesign. Invent, the InDesign plugin, turns each frame into a field, adds your backgrounds and photos, and sets a minimum resolution for uploaded photos.

0:30 In your admin area, you create a MegaEdit product and upload the .mex file to it.

0:37 Your customer picks a background and a photo, writes their headline, and sees the whole banner update as they go.

0:45 The Step-by-step tab walks through the whole build, with links to the detailed guide for each part. You can also download the finished sample from the Downloads tab and use it as your starting point.

Step-by-step video

0:00 Build a roller banner product, end to end

0:03 In this video we'll build a roller banner from start to finish. You design it in InDesign at full size. Invent, the plugin for InDesign, turns parts of the design into fields, adds sets of backgrounds and photos, and exports a .mex file. You upload that file to a MegaEdit product, and your customer personalises the banner in the editor.

0:25 The banner is 850 by 2000 millimetres with a 5 millimetre bleed. The background and logo strip sit on a locked layer at the bottom, and the frames the customer fills in sit on an editable layer above it. Keep locked items below the editable layer, so the banner displays properly in MegaEdit.

0:44 In Resources, add a resource set called Banner backgrounds, and choose Background Set.

0:50 Add each full-size background customers can choose, then save.

0:55 Add a Clipart Set called Hero photos, with the photos customers can pick for the main image.

1:02 Add an Image Variable called HeroPhoto. Allow uploads, and tick the Hero photos set.

1:09 Select the photo frame, set its type to Image, and map it to the HeroPhoto variable.

1:16 Link the headline, strapline and website frames to Text Variables, each with a label and help text.

1:23 On the headline and strapline, tick Fit to box and Fit to box Wrapping, so longer text shrinks and wraps to fit.

1:31 In each frame's General tab, untick rotation, movement, resizing, z-order and deletion, so everything stays in the safe area.

1:40 In Setup, turn off extra fields, and set a minimum image resolution. A small photo will then be flagged before the customer orders.

1:49 Validate, then export the .mex file and confirm the licence message.

1:56 In Product Management, add a new MegaEdit product and upload the .mex. Then set the price and the category.

2:04 As a customer, Background selection lists your backgrounds. Click one, and the whole banner changes.

2:11 Select Image offers uploads or your Hero photos set, and the photo appears on the banner straight away.

2:18 If the customer uploads a photo that's too small for the banner, the field is outlined and flagged as low resolution.

2:26 That's the whole build. Download the sample pack from the Downloads tab to see every setting, or use it as the starting point for your own.
