Overview

This page walks through one complete product: a four-page A5 event programme your customers personalise with a cover photo, their event details, a welcome message, the running order and a thank-you page. It covers the essential steps in order and links to the detailed guide for each part, so you can see how everything fits together before going deeper.

How the pieces fit together

  • InDesign - you design the pages: size, bleed, artwork and a frame for everything the customer will change.
  • Infigo Invent - the InDesign plugin that turns those frames into fields, gives each page its own form, and sets the rules for each field.
  • The .mex fileThe export format produced by the Invent InDesign plugin, containing a product template's structure, resources, variables, form logic, and configuration. - Invent exports your template as a .mex package.
  • A MegaEditInfigo's browser-based product personalisation editor, used to build and configure dynamic templates that end users customise online (text, images, clipart, masks, backgrounds, and more).product - you create the product on your storefront and upload the .mex to it.
  • Your customer - works through the programme one page at a time in the MegaEdit editor and sees it update as they go.

What you'll build

  • A cover photo your customer uploads, or picks from a set of event photos you provide.
  • Event name and date fields on the cover.
  • A welcome message chosen from a list you write (a Text Library), on page 2.
  • A running order and a thank-you message that customers can make longer, and that still fit their frames.
  • One form per page: on each page the customer only sees the fields for that page.
  • A fixed layout: customers change the content, but can't move, resize, rotate or delete the frames you set up.

The build at a glance

  • The finished template, its artwork and photos, and the exported .mex file are on the Downloads tab at the top of this page. Download the sample pack (.zip).

Go further

Good to know

  • Export to a folder on your computer, not one synced to OneDrive or a similar service.
  • Tick Fit to box Wrapping as well as Fit to box on paragraphs. Without it, a long paragraph is fitted onto one line and the type becomes very small.
  • Fit to box sizes the text to fill the frame, so it also grows when the customer deletes text. Draw each frame to fit its default text at your design size.
  • When you switch Setup Forms to Per Page Form, the page lists start empty. Add every variable to its page before you save.
  • Variables on master (parent) pages are ignored, so put editable frames on the document pages themselves.
  • When you change the template, export again and use Mex Import on the same product. Make sure Update product image is unticked to keep your product pictures.
  • In this sample, the cover photo frame starts empty with a "Drag image here" prompt until the customer adds a photo.
TipStart from the sample pack. Replace the artwork and photos with your own and keep the Invent setup, then follow Validate and export the .mex file and Create the MegaEdit product on the Step-by-step tab.

What's inside

  • EventProgramme.indd - the four-page InDesign template, already set up in Invent (cover photo, text fields, welcome dropdown, Fit to box, locked layout, one form per page).
  • Links - the page artwork and the placeholder cover photo the template uses (in MegaEdit the cover photo frame starts empty).
  • Event photos - the three images in the Event photos clipart set.
  • EventProgramme.mex - the exported template, ready to upload to a MegaEdit product.
  • README.txt - what's in the pack and how to use it.

The InDesign template uses Arial, which isn't included as a separate file; the .mex contains the font files Invent packages at export. Open the template in InDesign with Invent installed and look through each Invent tab, or upload the .mex to a new MegaEdit product straight away.

Step-by-step

  1. Design the programme in InDesign

Start with a finished design. This programme is four A5 pages (148 x 210 mm) with a 3 mm bleed, set up as single pages rather than facing spreads: a cover, a welcome page, the running order and a back cover. It has two layers: Background holds the fixed artwork on every page and is locked, and Editable holds what the customer personalises (a cover photo frame and the text frames). Give each frame a clear name in the Layers panel and use a fixed line height rather than Auto. For documents with spreads, see Exporting Spreads using Invent.

  2. Open the Infigo Invent panel

Invent works through one panel with five tabs. Resources holds images, text and colours that variables can use. Variables holds the fields on the customer's form. Properties sets up the selected frame. Setup controls how the product behaves in MegaEdit. Export checks the template and writes the .mex file. The Export tab's summary already shows four pages. If you don't have Invent yet, see Setting up the Invent plugin for InDesign.

  3. Add a Clipart Set of cover photos

In Resources, click Add Resource Set, type a name (here Event photos) and choose Clipart Set. Click Add Images / PDF to add the photos customers can pick for the cover, then Save. More detail: Image Variables & Clipart Resource Sets.

Resources > Add Resource Set > Clipart Set

  4. Add a Text Library of welcome messages

Click Add Resource Set again, name it Welcome messages and choose Text Library (it's on the second row of set types, so you may need to scroll down). For each option, type a Key (a short name such as Short welcome) and its Text, then click Add New Text. Tick Selecting this option will automatically create a dropdown variable for these resources and click Save. Invent creates a Dropdown variable with the same name. More detail: Text Library Resource Set and Dropdown Variables & Clipart Resource Sets.

  5. Add an Image Variable for the cover photo

In Variables, click Add Variable and choose Image Variable. Name it CoverPhoto and add a label and help text. Tick Allow Image Upload so customers can upload their own photo, and tick Event photos under Allow Clipart Resource Sets to offer yours too. Click Save. More detail: Configuring image variables to accept clipart, uploaded images or both.

  6. Map the cover photo frame to the variable

Select the cover photo frame on page 1. In Properties, set the frame Type to Image, then under Mapped set Type to Variable and choose CoverPhoto.

  7. Turn the text frames into form fields

Select the Event title frame. In Properties, tick Enable, click Link to new variable and choose Text Variable. Give it a name, a label and help text, and click Save. The frame's text becomes the default value. Do the same for the date and venue, the running order, the thank-you text and the website. For the other Text Variable options, such as character limits, see Configuring text inputs.

    Properties > Enable

    Properties > Enable
  8. Use Multi Line for long text

The running order and the thank-you text are several lines long, so set their Mode to Multi Line. The customer then gets a larger text box and can add or remove lines. Keep short fields such as the event name on Single Line.

Mode: Multi Line for the running order

Mode: Multi Line for the running order
  9. Make long text fit its frame

Customers can make the running order and the thank-you text longer, so tick Fit to box and Fit to box Wrapping on those frames in Properties. Fit to box resizes the text to fill its frame: it shrinks as the customer adds lines, and grows again if they remove some. With Wrapping ticked, the text keeps wrapping onto new lines; without it, a long paragraph is squeezed onto one line in very small type. Because the text always fills the frame, draw each frame to fit its default text at your design size. For the related Fit Width by Tracking option, see MegaEdit Problem Solvers: MegaScripts, Form Builder & Data.

  10. Map the welcome text to the dropdown

Select the welcome text frame on page 2 and tick Enable. Instead of linking a new variable, set Mapped Type to Variable and choose Welcome messages, the dropdown Invent made from your Text Library. Leave Fit to box off here: both messages fit the frame at the design size, and the frame is tall enough for the longer one.

  11. Lock the layout

Customers change the content, not the layout. For each editable frame, open Properties > General and, under Restrictions, untick Allow Rotation, Allow Movement, Allow Resizing, Allow Z-order Adjustments and Allow Deletion.

    General > Restrictions

    General > Restrictions
  12. Give each page its own form

In Variables, click Setup Forms, then Switch, choose Per Page Form and click Select. Now each page has its own list. For each variable in the Variable Pool, click Use, choose its page in Location (for example Bottom of Page: 3 for the running order) and click Add, then Save. In MegaEdit the customer sees only the fields for the page they're on. More detail: Building a form in Invent for use in MegaEdit.

    Switch > Per Page Form

    Switch > Per Page Form

  13. Set the product behaviour

In Setup > Field, untick Allow adding text fields and Allow adding image fields, so the programme keeps exactly the fields you designed. In Setup > Image, set a Minimum Image Resolution (150 here): customers are warned when a photo's resolution, at the size it is placed on the page, falls below this value. For every Setup option, see Invent Problem Solvers.

  14. Validate and export the .mex file

In Export, click Set Export File and choose a folder on your computer, not one synced to OneDrive or a similar service. Click Start Validations and fix anything it flags, then click Export and confirm the Media and Font License Confirmation. Invent saves the document and writes the .mex package.

0:00 Event programme product - overview

0:03 This page builds one complete product: a four-page event programme your customers personalise with their cover photo, event details, welcome message, running order and thank-you page.

0:15 You design the pages in InDesign. Invent, the InDesign plugin, turns each frame into a field, gives every page its own form, and exports the template as a .mex file.

0:27 In your admin area, you create a MegaEdit product and upload the .mex file to it.

0:34 Your customer works through the programme a page at a time: a photo for the cover, a welcome message from your list, then the running order and the back page.

0:44 The Step-by-step tab walks through the whole build, with links to the detailed guide for each part. You can also download the finished sample from the Downloads tab and use it as your starting point.

Step-by-step video

0:00 Build an event programme product, end to end

0:04 In this video we'll build a four-page event programme from start to finish. You design the pages in InDesign. Invent, the plugin for InDesign, turns parts of the design into fields, gives each page its own form, and exports a .mex file. You upload that file to a MegaEdit product, and your customer fills in the programme one page at a time. The Step-by-step tab links to a detailed guide for each part.

0:28 Start with a finished design: four A5 pages with a 3 millimetre bleed, set up as single pages. The artwork sits on a locked background layer, and everything the customer changes sits on an editable layer.

0:41 Invent works through one panel with five tabs: Resources, Variables, Properties, Setup and Export. The Export summary already shows four pages.

0:52 In Resources, add a Clipart Set called Event photos, with the photos customers can choose for the cover.

0:59 Next, a second set: choose Text Library, and call it Welcome messages.

1:05 Add each message with a short key and its text. Tick the option to create a dropdown variable, and Invent makes the dropdown for you.

1:14 Add an Image Variable called CoverPhoto. Allow uploads, and tick the Event photos set so customers can pick one of yours too.

1:23 Select the photo frame on the cover, set its type to Image, and map it to the CoverPhoto variable.

1:30 For each text frame, tick Enable, then link it to a new Text Variable with a name, a label and help text.

1:38 The running order and the thank-you text are several lines long, so set their mode to Multi Line.

1:45 On those frames, tick Fit to box and Fit to box Wrapping. The text resizes to fill the frame, shrinking as the customer adds lines, and keeps wrapping onto new lines. So draw each frame to fit its default text.

1:59 On page 2, enable the welcome frame and map it to the Welcome messages dropdown. Both messages fit at the design size, so it doesn't need Fit to box.

2:09 In each frame's General tab, untick rotation, movement, resizing, z-order and deletion, so customers change the content, not the layout.

2:19 In Variables, click Setup Forms, then Switch, and choose Per Page Form.

2:24 For each variable, click Use and choose its page. The cover fields go on page 1, the welcome on page 2, and so on.

2:33 In Setup, Field, turn off adding text and image fields.

2:38 In Setup, Image, set a minimum image resolution for uploaded photos.

2:43 In Export, set the export file to a folder on your computer, run the validations, then click Export and confirm the licence message.

2:53 In your admin area, go to Product Management and click Add new. Name the product, choose the MegaEdit type, upload the .mex file, and click Create.

3:03 Set the price on the product variant, map the product to a category, and add a picture.

3:09 As a customer, page 1 shows only the cover fields: the photo, the event name, and the date and venue.

3:17 Select Image offers Images, to upload your own, or Cliparts, your Event photos set.

3:23 The chosen photo appears on the cover straight away.

3:27 Use the arrows under the programme to move on. Page 2 has just the welcome dropdown.

3:34 Choose the longer welcome, and the text on the page changes to match.

3:39 Page 3 is the running order. Add a line, and the text shrinks a little to fit. Page 4 has the thank-you text and website.

3:48 That's the whole build. Download the sample pack from the Downloads tab to see every setting, or use it as the starting point for your own.
